On Friday, May 16, 2025, Mumbai Police received an anonymous email threatening bomb explosions at two of the city’s most prominent locations: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Details of the Threat

The email, sent from an unidentified address, warned of imminent bombings at both the airport and the hotel. It referenced the executions of convicted terrorists Afzal Guru and Savukku Shankar, suggesting the attacks were acts of retaliation. The message claimed that explosives had been strategically placed and were ready to detonate.

Immediate Response by Authorities

Upon receiving the threat, Mumbai Police, along with Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS) and dog squads, promptly initiated security protocols. Both the airport and the hotel were evacuated, and thorough searches were conducted. Thankfully, no suspicious items were found during these operations.

Investigation Underway

A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the anonymous sender under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Cybercrime units are actively working to trace the origin of the email and identify the individual or group responsible for the threat.

Public Safety Measures

In light of the threat, security has been heightened across Mumbai, especially at key public places and transportation hubs. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.

Historical Context

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was one of the primary targets during the 2008 Mumbai attacks, making any threats against it particularly alarming. The recent email’s references to past terrorist figures have further intensified concerns among security agencies and the public.

While the threat was ultimately deemed a hoax, the incident underscores the importance of maintaining robust security measures and public awareness. Mumbai Police continue to investigate the source of the email to prevent any future occurrences.
